Flaming Lip’s “Fight Test” sounds like Cat Steven’s “Father and Son”

This is a particularly fascinating sound-alike. “Fight Test” is a great song in it’s own right, but the vocal melody appears lifted right now of “Father and Son”.

Listen for the vocal melody and cadence of these lines:

Fight Test (2002): “So it came time, to fight. I thought I’d just step aside and that time would prove you wrong.

Father and Son (1971): “It’s not time to make a change, just relax and take it easy. You’re still young, that’s you’re fault.

I heard the Flaming Lips song in the gym for the first time this weekend. I found myself singing along with the lyrics of Father & Son!

Totally. I was just listening to Cat Stevens today when I came upon that song. I recognized the song, but knew that the Cat Stevens song wasn’t the one I was recognizing. I couldn’t figure it out, and it was driving me crazy, so finally I googled it and found this webpage and the answer to my question. Sounds just like Fight Test.

THANK YOU. This was driving me so insane when I was listening to “Tea For the Tillerman,” but I could not remember for the life of me what I was thinking of because I haven’t listened to the Flaming Lips in years. You rock.

@BR – Oh I know! I was at work & the Flaming Lips tune came on, and I had the same reaction. Whaaa? The vocal rhythms are very similar.
