    Coldplay : Scientist

    Recorded in 2002

Here’s a cool sound-a-like sent in by a reader. Honestly, I don’t really listen to Taylor Swift, so I had no instinct about whether “Haunted” sounded like “Scientist”. But in the first couple chord changes of Swift’s song, there was instant recognition. The progression is really similar.

I wouldn’t really label this a rip-off, but the similarities are interesting. Have any of you noticed this while scrubbing your radio dial?

What song sounds like Coldplay?
Haunted sounds like Coldplay Scientist
  • Jeremy

Haunted sounds more like Zombie by the Cranberries

    • http://www.soundsjustlike.com Adam Wagner

Awesome, I’ll look that one up. Thanks dude :-)

  • http://www.soundsjustlike.com Adam Wagner

Jeremy, you’re totally right. It bears a stronger similarity to Zombie, I think.

  • Matt

If you slowed down the intro to Haunted it would be very similar to parts of John Murphy’s “In The House In A Heartbeat”…

  • Book

sounds like undertaker’s ministry theme which released before them both lol

  • Mark S

nope, more like Shakira whenever, whereever

  • LPM

Actually it sounds more like the chorus from Coldplay’s “Fix You” to me, but either way it’s Coldplay

  • Luca

    Recorded in 202? O.o Prehistoric music :O

    • soundsjustlike

    • Kate

You are completely right. I always wondered what song Scientist reminded me of. Now I know.

      • http://twitter.com/WilliamTheMa William Ma

That’s actually the first thought I had when I heard swift’s track. Not coldplay.

        • Elliott

That’s because each of them use the “4 chords” that most pop songs do these days.
          http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oOlDewpCfZQ

          • Keith

Those are actually four chords in a major key, these are four chords in a minor key. These are i-VI-III-VII, or something like a-F-C-G. Other songs that use the minor progression are “The Kids Aren’t Alright” by Offspring http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VrZ4sMRYimw and “Rods and Cones” by Blue Man Group http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mGiX9qTrfnE

          • Music Theory

That is retrograde,vi can’t go backwards to iii, but a iii can only go to a vi and sometimes a IV in rare situations

          • Big Pops

The progression here is a VI-IV-I-V if thought of in a major key. It’s really the easiest way to think of it. It’s a very common progression though, so finding two songs that use it isn’t at all surprising. Macklemore’s “And We Danced” also uses the same progression.

          • http://www.facebook.com/trenton.dunstan Trenton Dunstan

Actually, they only use three songs, or I know The Scientist uses three. But it doesn’t use that progression because the first chord is minor, not major.

          • Todd

Scientist, Haunted and Zombie all have similar but DIFFERENT chord progressions. Transposed into A natural minor: Scientist is Am, F, C, Csus2. Haunted is Am, F, C, G. Zombie is Am, Fmaj7, C6, Gadd13/B.

  • http://www.facebook.com/john.trapp.1297 John Trapp

    • BOB

There’s not much musicians can do about it…but to write different lyrics, melodies and textures. If you take a more deeper look into the music theoretically, you can not find to much combinations that a simple listener would like to “consume”, often followed by a comment like…aaaaa this is such a lame s**t!!! So the musicians stick to some well known patters and that is why we have such a unoriginal music today :D Everybody wants to be listened to and they do the same thing that previously has been done,in therms of production and music style, tempo, key, rhythm just to have a HIT – something that people would absorb instantly.

Now….the opposite to all this is jazz and classic music…so if you’re bored, just put on your headphones and play the AIR by JSB :D and you will see what we all have forgotten and you’ll hear how beautiful the music can be….

  • Pinkerton

also kinda sounds like pink floyds the great gig in the sky

  • Magicf

It’s the chord progression that makes it sound similar. You can say that about almost any pop song that has that progression. They all sound the same!!

  • Clayton

    vi – IV – I – V Chord Progression, it’s everywhere.

  • Johnny

Coldplay’s the Scientist sounds like George Harrison’s Isn’t it a pity.

  • Timmyl8

cranberries indeed Austin. i think you can win every lawsuid with the information on the internet about copyrights and this website if you make a song that sounds like an other song (sorry for bad english, i’m dutch).

Nah, this is just the most typical chord progression of all time.

  • Guest

This girl has made a medley with haunted, xombie and other songs using the same chords, and she even included her own song:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zht1qUc6Vfo

    Everything is a remix!

  • Virotti

This girl has made a medley with haunted, zombie and other songs using the same chords, and she even included her own song:

  • Taylor

This is such a stretch. You can’t copy write a chord progression. The rest sounds totally different.

  • somewhereonEarth

Pop music producers steal good stuff all the time.

  • Dave

There are a ton of songs that use this progression… personally I think of John Lennon’s “Imagine” first.

  • Jacopo Barberis

    That bitch

  • rnodern

it’s a very common chord progression

  • Steve

This is a very common chord progression. Perhaps if the melodies were similar there would be more ground for the comparison.

  • Rick

    common taylor…

  • http://www.facebook.com/BartekWrobel96 Bartoż Wróbel

I was thinking about Zombie too

  • Jimmy18

they always copy melodies from better artist…in this case,COLDPLAY

  • Zach

This is the second most common chord progression in western music, right after the I’m Yours/Let It Be progression.

  • Jim

What a surprise…. two songs that use a basic four chord progression sound similar.

  • Lavasd

One begins to wonder something about Taylor Swifts songs, if shes constantly talking about how her x-boyfriends do all this bad stuff to her, how is it possible that its just their fault? Obviously its her, I mean come on, every man you meet is always going to do horrible things to you then kick you to the curb? Highly unlikely.

  • MusicIsLife

haunted also sounds a little like bittersweet symphony at the beginning.

  • Fluffy

Well actually another song that sounds like “The Scientist” is “Pieces” by Sum 41

  • Da Thug

Coldplay : Scientist sounds a bit like, Imagine : John Lennon

  • J

That’s so bad on Swift’s part, she should be ashamed of such lazy songwriting. I hope she at least thanked Coldplay for “inspiring” her

  • That guy

It actually wouldn’t surprise me if Taylor did rip his one off.

  • Spaceman Jones

Everyone should check out the Willie Nelson cover of the Scientist

  • Spinelicker5

    I do love those chords.

  • ty

    Thanks Vsauce!!!

  • Kakeru

    Hate Taylor swift

  • hey ;)

Taylor Swift’s a fraud. She ‘writes’ her own songs…

  • BOB
