Both are good songs. The chord progression in both songs is common enough. The vocals are completely different. Still, the vibe between the two songs is definitely close enough to mistake one for the other during certain parts.

The guitar riff in Semi-Charmed Life sounds like a simplified score of Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust. Same tone, same chords, just some notes removed, making it easier to play.

Drum fills are not even close to similar. Not even hard to tell the difference at all.

Not that similar… Not even the same number of chords in the progression (SCL: I V IV, TP: I vi V IV). The guitar for TP starts with a high I chord and descends to each chord after, SCL starts on a low I and ascends to V. They aren’t in the same key. The tempo is very similar, that’s about it.

These aren’t even close. The rhythm is similar, but the chords are very different as well as the progression itself. It may sound like the same to a layman, but to an actual musician they are miles different.

1993 and 1997… I would have guessed that these songs were released even closer to each other.

They remind me of the same years of my life.

…I had never heard the titles of either one, and when the first one played, I thought it was the second one. Then the second one played. They are totally the same fluffing song. But the second one is better.

I dunno…… a lot of songs all sounded the same from this era of rock-revival and grunge and whatnot.

The songs sound similar but I don’t believe they are sound the exactly the same. I’ve listened to 3eb more than Spin Doctors to know that they are different bands. There are a few changes that makes each song stand out from another though. On Semi Charmed Kind of Life the distortion is toned down when the drums kick in, as Two Princes has more of a distorted tone throughout.

Both of these songs have catchy guitar-driven chord progressions, but they are not the same. Two Princes is D-Bm-A-G. Semi-Charmed Life is G-D-C9.

I don’t agree for the drum intros…
The first is a kind of rock introduction, and the second is like a reggae intro. But they are not both similar JUST because we hear a snare.
