Tom Petty’s “Mary Jane’s Last Dance” sounds like the Jayhawk’s “Waiting for the Sun”

Although the Jayhawks never brought plagiarism charges against Tom Petty for this soundalike, the similarities are unmistakable. Oh, and I should add the Jayhawks opened for Tom Petty during 1992, and Petty heard “Waiting for the Sun” every night.

Wow, I never knew about this, I always thought that this Tom Petty song was older than this. The songs are really similar.

Ironically, Petty sued the Chili Peppers because he claimed “Dani California” infringed on “last Dance”.

I was just going to mention the RHCP issue ha – come on Tom!

Petty never sued the Peppers. He said he wouldn’t because so many songs sound the same throughout rock n roll, especially blues music. He also said he was a fan. It was a radio DJ and Petty fans who called for him to sue.

Also..Petty’s keyboard player Benmont Tench played on this Jayhawks song so there is no way in hell he didn’t know about how similar Mary Jane’s Last Dance was because he was on both damn songs.

Dani California on the otherhand was inspired by Sweet Home Alabama and John Fruciante listening alot to Wu Tang Clan. He was interviewed alot and asked about the inspiration and even before there was the whole RHCP/Petty b.s..

Wow this is so strange when I saw Tom Petty’s name I assumed it was going to be compared to RHCP.

It has a similar groove, but the chord progression is different and the melody is completely different. Bridge is different. That drum groove was pretty popular at the time. I think even Sheryl Crow had a song that started with guitar like that and that groove. Whatever.
