Lynyrd Skynyrd : Sweet Home Alabama

    Recorded in 1973

Warren Zevon (along with LeRoy Marinell &Waddy Wachtel) had his only top 40 hit with Werewolves Of London. The theme & title were inspired by the 1935 Stanley Bergerman film “Werewolf of London”, and the music, it seems, inspired by Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Sweet Home Alabama“.

Sure, it’s a common enough progression. But to be written four or so years after such a chart buster as “Sweet Home Alabama” is sorta ballsy.

Take a listen & let me know what you think.

Kid Rock also did a rip-off of both songs

  • http://www.soundsjustlike.com Adam Wagner

    Ha, that’s true Mike.

  • Lila

Kid Rock did a rip off of “Sweet Home Alabama” he mentioned it like 20 times in the song “all summer long”

  • Kyle

Steve Miller Band’s “Take The Money And Run” should be included

  • ryan

I’m not a fan of Kid Rock’s song, but I saw an interview with him and he talked about how he purposefully used riffs from both these songs because they are so similar. He also mentioned “Take the money and run” and said he tried to incorporate it in the song as well, but ended up leaving it out.

  • Benpaco

Feel so stupid! Just sent this away as a sounalike, but didn’t realize it was already on here!

  • http://cutestcatintheworld.blogspot.com Karizzle Krist

The first time I heard Werewolves of London I was really surprised by how similar it was to Sweet Home Alabama.

  • B

I tripped out when I heard the Werewolf song. Now my girlfriend and I are in a debate. She think the don’t sound the same, maybe similar. I say it is the same song!

  • chris

Kidr rock is paying homage to skynyrd. Any idiot should clearly know that. He mentions them as his heros constantly. Not everything is a big scary crime with sampling but your I.Q.s are

  • Jagger Corcione

And if you notice, Kid Rock’s All Summer Long is almost an exact mix of the two

  • Jildert Tolsma

very similar, but goes to show how many other people can take a song and put it into their own form, there own mind set and change some areas and show their personality. both great songs! happens more now with all the techno and electronica. Its great to see peoples imaginations

do so research before posting… sweet home alabama came out 4yrs prior to werewolf in London

Sweet Home Alabama” is a song by Southern rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd that first appeared in 1974 on their second album, Second Helping.

It reached #8 on the US charts in 1974, and was the band’s second hit single…..

“Werewolves of London” is a rock song composed by LeRoy Marinell, Waddy Wachtel, and Warren Zevon and performed by Zevon. Included on Zevon’s 1978 album Excitable Boy, it featured accompaniment by bassist John McVie and drummer Mick Fleetwood of Fleetwood Mac.

The single was released by Asylum as catalog number 45472. It entered the American Top 40 charts on April 22, 1978, reaching number 21, and remained in the Top 40 for 6 weeks.

Because the emphasis of the melody is on the note G, the song is in the key of G major and the chord progression (D-C-G) is V-IV-I (rather than I-bVII-IV).[1]….

so there infact you are wrong and need to look into things before making your own assumptions

sweet home was not a rip off of werewolves…. sweet home was released in 74 and werewolves was released in 78

  • Notyou

Sweet Home Alabama was recorded first, dumbass.

  • Skarmillion

and kid rock – All summer long sounds like werewolves…

    • smssskaq

I thought it was Kid Rock’s All Summer Long, then did a double take. That is a total ripoff of Werewolves.

      • Ryan

except werewolves is a ripoff of skynyrd

        • Adam Lawrence

Except werewolves was written at the same time as sweet home and in a different country

          • buzzkill

except werewolves was written 5 years later

    • mexicankins

i thought they were talking about that one not this one

    • soundsjustlike

Kid Rock’s version is more of a tribute. It doesn’t even pretend to be original.

    • Stephen

It’s a mix of both of these songs. I think the Kid Rock song had something to do with this song being requested.

  • ekathe85

Look up for “Encuentro con el diablo” a song by Argentina’s Serú Girán. It’s a lot like Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Sweet Home Alabama”. It was intentional, though.

  • Dan

I had heard a story that Lyrnrd Skynrd had requested a license to use the same riff and chord progression… so it doesn’t surprise me that these two songs sound just like each other.

    • Dan

Ahem, other way around :P (I just checked the years of recording)

  • Draemor

I played Werewolves of London and had to double check that I wasn’t listening to Sweet Home Alabama

  • little&big

WWW”HHHHHAAATTT!!!! heard werewolves on the radio and thought it was sweet home Alabama…Sweet home came first though

  • someone

kid Rock’s all summer long mashed these two songs

    • HerpDerpington

It mashed Sweet Home Alabama? I think you need to get your ears checked.

      • dafuq

Why don’t you actually listen to the Kid Rock song? Like, the instrumental after he sings “Singin’ Sweet Home Alabama all summer long”?

  • Innika

    include Avri Lavigne “Mobile”

  • GOOMH

I remember hearing this and thinking just that years ago!

  • http://www.facebook.com/kyle.morris.92505 Kyle Morris

no way, this sounds almost like sweet home alabama, but it sounds EXACTLY like shooting star by Bad Company

  • http://www.facebook.com/akira.mcgregor Akira McGregor

    only plays one song…

  • Jay

Wow, I remember listening to Werewolves of London a long time ago and thinking, “Wow, this reminds me of Sweet Home Alabama.” :P

  • disiskrazi

I think this was on purpose. This first “artist” seems like a person who would take a tune and change the lyrics to make it goofy. But I am not gonna do any research.

  • http://www.facebook.com/joel.cheatwood.31 Joel Cheatwood

I have always thought this, but I always get a little disappointed when I realize it isn’t Werewolves of London that’s playing.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Ryan-Nolan/100000551775591 Ryan Nolan

Kid Rock’s all summer long is like both of them put into one song :L

  • Austin

That piano melody has been recycled a lot haha

  • Cliff Roth

That is why something seems weird every time I listen to Sweet Home Alabama its because my mind is expecting Werewolves of London.

  • http://deadbuffalopodcast.blogspot.com/ DeadBuffalo Podcast

Sounds pretty cool. Maybe somebody like Kid Rock will make something out of this. derp.

If you listen to Zevon’s “Play It All Night Long”, featuring the lyrics “Sweet Home Alabama/Play that dead band’s song” among a litany of intentionally cruel Flannery O’ Conner-type Southern archetypes, you’ll see he clearly had thought about Skynyrd a whole lot.

  • Ian

Centerfold by the J. Geils Band has the same progression as both of these songs.

  • Andrew

    Kid Rock mixed these songs…

  • 01010110

and the kid rock wrecked both songs simultaneously by combining them for sweet home Alabama all summer long.

  • Juicy

Not really a rip off, Zevon did give credit to Lynyrd Skynyrd, AND this was well known for having the same background…but smilar none the less. Both great songs however.

  • Dave

Oh, I’ve been saying this for years. I guess this resemblance is what “They All Sounded The Same” is based on.

  • bsaget

I think What I Got by Sublime kinda sounds like Sweet Home

  • Drew

These are the only two songs I ever knew sounded similar.

  • SexyLipsBoobs

    omg they are exactly alike

I think Werewolves of London sounds like Suck a Caribou’s Ass by Wesley Willis…

  • rankinbass

The intro has a slight resemblance of “We Are Family” by Sister Sledge

  • No

If you think Zevon sounds like Skynyrd, your taste resides entirely in your mouth. Not to mention your ear are made of old 60s era beer cans.

  • No

Anyone that believes Zevon ripped off Skynyrd has their head up their arse and that’s why they can’t hear real music.

  • No

If you believe Zevon ripped off Skynyrd, you are tone deaf.

Maybe 2% of you know what you are taking about regarding these songs. Maybe!

  • Hector

Wtf I thought they were the same song!!

  • J

They were all taking the same drugs, too. LOL
